This page contains an inventory of all the puppies that survived the first two weeks. We were very sad to lose our biggest male and female in the first three days they were with us. Even though we watch the puppies 24 hours a day it only takes a few minutes for one to suffocate under the mother and we lost two beautiful pups in this manner. For those of you that are keeping track, number 1 female and number 12 male are missing.
It has been my experience that people really enjoy this page and use it as a reference for identifying puppies in the pictures that I will post later when they are mobile and active. I also find it helpful if several of the pups lose their ribbons at the same time! It has happened! Although I can identify the pups without ribbons fairly quickly it is reassuring to know I can double check if I need to.
There are certain characteristic that change very little or not at all. Ridges do not change over time and are most visible immediately after birth when the puppy is still wet. Most of the puppies had very sparse fur and getting a good view of the ridges was very difficult. These pictures are taken at two weeks and the window of clarity for viewing the ridges is long past. For some of the pups we will have to wait until 7-8 weeks before the structure of the ridge will reveal itself again.
Of course this is just a reference page. These are "babies" and not miniature adults so much of their appearance will change in the next several weeks. White markings will shrink or disappear, pink spots will get fur and fur will change colour. In fact, ridgebacks change colour for up to two years so commenting on colour here is hardly meaningful.
was the fifth to arrive and weighed in at 404g. He is dark with a bit of a shadow mask. His ridge is long but the crowns and box are difficult to see clearly. We shall have to wait and she how it develops. He has some white on his chest and belly and has a good tail. Overall a very nice looking puppy.
arrived 6th in line and was a dark colour with no white markings. Although he is dark he does not have a mask. His ridge is very wide and has beautifully defined crowns and a symmetrical box. Good tail.
made his debut in 7th position weiging in at 327g. He is very fine and the smallest of the males. His fur is dark and he does not have any white markings. His ridge is correct and he has a good tail.
was number nine in the race to be born. He was born without much fur and although he is catching up with the others his fur is still fairly sparse. He has a wide and long ridge but the box and crowns are still very hard to define. He has no mass and a good tail.
arrived in 10th position and was a hefty 485g. He is dark with no white and a light mask. He has a long and wide ridge and it appears to be correct but it is still too hard to tell. He was born in the car on our first "rush" visit to the vetrinarian. False alarm... the little devil!
is our " miricale" boy and we are very lucky to have him. He was stuck in his mother and had to be forcibly pulled out . To our amazement he not only lived but is a beauty! 396g at birth, no white, correct ridge, good tail, dark fur and full mask.
was number 13 and hit the scale at 380g. He is very dark and very strong! He has a very long and wide ridge with two or more crowns. I can't say for sure yet. He is dark in colour with a white spot on his breast and a good tail.
boy is our last puppy to arrive and weighed in at 340g. He is dark with a shadow mask. His ridge is correct and his tial is good. No white markings. He was born 16 hours after the first puppy arrived!
was the second puppy and the second female born. She weighed in at 370g and of all the puppies she had the most fur at birth. Her tail is good and her ridge is correct. She has a small white spot on her chest, has a full mask and compact body.

was the third puppy born and the third female. She weighed in at 386g. She has a shadow mask, is dark in colour and has no white markings. She has a good tail and a correct ridge.
was the forth born and the fourth female to arrive. She has a light shadow mask and is quite dark. No white markings She is very feminine and "girly". Her fur is still very short on her back but her ridge is long and correct as is her tail. Her birth weight was 397g.
was the 8th to arrive and the fifth female born. She was very small weighing in at 309g. She had a serious kink in her tail about 1 cm from the end of her tail which we chose to amputate a day after birth. She had very little fur at birth but is now coming along nicely. She is dark with a shadow mask and has white marking on her chest. Her ridge is long but has offset crowns.
